The upcoming World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th each year and is the perfect time to reflect on our connection with nature and our responsibility to protect the environment.
The ancient practice of yoga doesn’t just ensure fitness of body and mind, but it also helps strengthen our bond with our nature, and our surroundings. Yoga is deeply governed by the five elements of nature: earth, fire, air, water and space. The mountains are a true testament to the mighty presence of nature, and the Mountain Pose can really help you appreciate that. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart, spine elongated, and shoulders relaxed. As you hold this pose, feel a sense of stability and strength, connecting with the enduring nature of the mountains. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling fresh energy and exhaling any tensions or worries.
Trees are a prominent part of our environment and one that gives us the air that we breathe. The Tree Pose, thus, lets you embody the resilience and strength of a tree. Begin by shifting your weight onto one foot and gently place the sole of the opposite foot on your inner thigh or calf, avoiding the knee joint. Extend your arms overhead, like branches reaching towards the sky. This pose encourages stability, focus, and a sense of oneness with the environment.
Our mighty sun looks over our world and helps our environment flourish and prosper. The Surya Namaskar is a popular yoga pose that pays respect to the sun. Stand at the front of your mat and raise your arms overhead, greeting the sun. As you move through a series of poses, such as Forward Fold, Downward Dog, and Cobra Pose, take in the warmth and light of the sun.
The Child’s Pose yoga gives you an opportunity to embrace the earth and respect it as a child would respect their parents. It’s one of the best poses that connects you with the earth that we call home. To perform the Child’s Pose, kneel on the floor with knees hip-width apart and toes touching. Exhale and lower your torso, folding forward from the hips. Rest your forehead on the mat and extend your arms forward or alongside your body. Stay in the pose for a few breaths or several minutes.
If there’s a yoga pose that connects your entire being to the earth, it’s the Savasana. When you’re lying on the ground, most of your body is in touch with the earth, letting you feel its warm embrace. Lie flat on your back, arms and legs relaxed, palms facing upwards. Close your eyes and consciously release any remaining tensions. Feel the ground beneath you and offer gratitude for the earth's support and reflect on how you can contribute to its preservation.
