Since 1993, the 10th of October has been observed as World Mental Health Day every year. This day is an excellent opportunity to spread awareness about mental health and well-being, as well as support mental health as a universal and essential requirement for everyone. This year’s theme is ‘‘Mental health is a universal human right”, which aims to ensure that mental health is available easily to those who require it.

Besides seeking professional help, one of the best ways to boost your mental health is by engaging in physical activity. This not only helps you stay physically fit, but also improves your self-confidence, reduces anxiety, and boosts your overall mood. Many doctors also recommend yoga for anxiety and stress. In this blog, let us explore how you can profoundly improve your mental health by physical exercise this World Mental Health Day.

Positive Effects of Regular Exercise on Mental Health

Stress Reduction

One of the most beneficial effects of physical activity on mental health is its ability to reduce stress. When you engage in exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are natural mood booster hormones. These endorphins act as stress relievers, helping to alleviate feelings of tension and anxiety. Regular physical activity can provide a healthy and natural way to manage the stresses of daily life.

Emotional Well Being

Exercise can be an effective natural antidepressant. It stimulates the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are associated with feelings of happiness and pleasure. As a result, individuals who engage in regular physical activity often report improved mood, reduced symptoms of depression, and an overall sense of emotional well-being.

Enhance Self Confidence

Physical activity can boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Achieving fitness goals, whether they are related to weight loss, strength gains, or endurance improvements, can provide a sense of accomplishment and pride. Additionally, physical activity can improve body image and self-perception, leading to increased self-esteem.

Physical activity is not just beneficial for your body, it also has positive effects on your brain. Exercise has been linked to improved cognitive function, including better memory, sharper focus, and enhanced problem-solving skills. Regular physical activity may reduce the risk of cognitive health disorders like dementia as you age.

Many forms of physical activity, such as team sports, group fitness classes and dance training provide opportunities for social interaction and support. Building social connections through these activities can help avoid feelings of loneliness and improve mental health. The sense of belonging that comes with working out together can provide excellent emotional support.

Now that we understand the impact of physical activity on mental health, here are some ways you can incorporate activity into your daily life.

If you're new to exercise, start with small goals, like a 15-minute walk or a brief stretching routine. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of your workouts as you become more comfortable with regular physical activity.

Walking for mental health

To naturally start physical activity, try to adapt your life around small activities. Take the stairs instead of the lift once in a while and walk or jog to get the groceries instead of using a vehicle.

Just like any other appointment, schedule your workouts into your daily routine. Consistency is key to reaping the mental health benefits of exercise.

Mindful Yoga for Mental Health

Among the physical activities that strengthen the mind, yoga may be the most effective. Besides seeking professional medical treatment, one can also practise yoga for depression. Incorporate yoga into your fitness routine to not only be of sound body but of sound mind as well.

On World Mental Health Day 2023, let us remember that mental health is not just about the mind, but also intrinsically linked to our physical well-being. Incorporating physical activity into our daily lives can be a powerful tool for nurturing our mental health.
