The Köhler Effect, Friendship Day and Shared Workouts

The Köhler Effect is a psychological phenomenon where people naturally start to push harder when they are working out or doing a task with a friend instead of alone. You and your bestie can turn a gruelling solo exercise into a fun shared workout, which becomes a high-performance bonding experience. Research based on population health and wellness data shows that exercising with a companion or a friend makes you 32% more likely to hit your fitness goals.

Besides, it makes you 45% more likely to report good mental health. Double win.

This turns a lonesome workout into a fun, shared workout habit. Medical journals such as PMC also concludes exercising alone and with others was better than no exercise for maintaining better physical activity levels in both sexes. Habit formation in fitness requires something as solid as the bond you shared in your childhood when you played cricket or other sports daily. In our rushed lives, getting together for workout activities is a great way to stay fit while also spending time with your friends.

At FITPASS, we can promise you that making time for fitness will offer you rewards in more than one way.

Workout Together With FITPASS

“We live in different places.” The idea of group workouts appeals to many.

And soon come the roadblocks… Roadblocks that might stop you and your friend from working out together. Here are a few of them:

• You live far away from each other
• Certain gyms and fitness centres don’t offer activities that you enjoy
• One of you might dislike a particular fitness centre
• The fees are unreasonable
• You don’t want to be restricted to a single workout routine

With a single FITPASS membership, you can choose to attend any workout at any fitness centre in your city. These activities are incredibly helpful fitness gifts for women, as there are days when their bodies need a yoga session while on other days, they benefit from strength training. So instead of gifting each other knick-knacks, choose to Gift FITPASS this Friendship Day.

Reasons to Go For Group Workouts Together

Let this Friendship Day be a reminder to exercise together and boost longevity for many more years of laughter and shared happiness. You may be 30 today, but when it comes to standard performance markers, your fitness level might fall in the range of 50-year-olds. We wish it were a joke, but a sedentary lifestyle across India makes it difficult for people to be physically fit for their age bracket.

Now let’s go over why you need to start working out with your bestie this year.

• Push Each Other to Do Better: Believe it or not, there’s a high chance that you might not achieve your goals by working out alone. Your trainer/instructor motivates you, but that just isn’t the same. So who do you need? Your friend who knows your potential and, when you’re about to quit, who would be better to motivate you than your bestie? Also, you can joke around and make working out much more fun.
• Try New Activities Together: The number of workouts available these days is actually uncanny, and so many choices can confuse you. While you might be stuck in a boring gym routine, you should call your ami (friend in French) this Friendship Day and, in addition to the Friendship Day gifts and surprises, go and try a new Friendship Day activity, a workout. There are over 15+ workout activities such as yoga, kickboxing, MMA, aerobics, gym workouts, CrossFit, Zumba, Bollywood dance classes and much more. So you and your workout buddy never get bored with one workout format.
• No Reasons to Cancel: How do you stop quit workouts? One of these days you may genuinely have to attend an event. Other days you might be too tired or have energy only for a Netflix series. In times like these, your friend will drag you to the fitness centre. It might be annoying at first, but eventually you’ll get the best out of it. And similarly, you can do the same for them on their lazy days. Plus, you and your friend can discuss everything related to your workout with each other when you are together. This ensures steady progression instead of training plateaus.
• Working Out is Safer: Your friend has got your back, and you have got his/her. No, we’re not talking about getting into fights. But think about all the times you had to wait for your trainer to come and assist you at bench press or request a fellow gym goer to assist you with pull-ups. Your drook (friend in Russian. You didn’t know that, did you?) and you can assist each other and keep each other away from harm’s way.

Reasons to go for Group Workouts Alone

• Socialise: Well, the good thing is that you can always make new friends without leaving your old friends behind. At group workout sessions, you meet others like you who enjoy the same routines. Coordinate with them and work towards your goals together. These friendships can be limited to workout sessions without being trivial. And who knows, you might even make some friends that permeate other parts of your life as well.
• Accountability: What happens when you miss a workout session? The thing about working out alone is that you aren’t answerable to anyone but yourself. Miss a group workout session, and your trainer will ask you all the right questions so you arrive at class a few minutes earlier the next time. You might find your group members asking about your absence in the previous session.
• Doing it Right: These days, fitness classes are more about learning techniques and forms. These are gifts for fitness freaks. Group session Instructors focus on everyone in the class, which is much better than the floor trainers who explain the exercise and leave to instruct others. Your gym friends can also let you know if you have missed something, which is why you would do better to join a group workout to get the best results.
• Getting Into A Routine: Just about anything works out if you get into a routine. But creating a schedule is one of the most difficult tasks. The thing with a session is that it is held more or less at the same time and everything is structured. Start with a warm-up, then the workout, and finally cool down. Fitness classes and gym sessions help you establish a defined routine, which gives the best results.
