How to Encourage Your Mom to Start a Fitness Routine

Mother’s Day is around the corner and it might be the best time to encourage our mothers to start a fitness routine and live long and healthy lives. Ageing parents usually are not in the best of shape due to inactivity and age-related diseases. It’s only natural that the responsibility of guiding them towards a healthier lifestyle falls squarely upon our shoulders. 

So, let us bring in Mother’s Day this year with the aim to guide and encourage mothers all over the world to focus on their health and fitness. This will not only keep diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes at bay, but also strengthen their bones and muscles. 

Tips to encourage your mom to start a fitness routine

When you suggest the topic of fitness, remember that it should come from a place of love and well-being for your mother. Anything remotely preachy may have a negative impact. Also, trying to blame their lifestyle for their current state or making a comparison with other fitter women is a huge no-no. Start by saying that you want the best life for them and want them to enjoy a great quality of life.  

It’s important to show your mom the huge impact that fitness can have in their life. Besides preventing systemic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes, exercising will also help them remain agile with stronger muscles and bones. This means they can do anything that a younger person could do, including enjoying sports, running, cycling etc. 

For some moms, exercising just to keep their body active and fit may be enough motivation. But others may need an external motivating factor. Being active and able to play with their grandchildren is one, for example. Find out what is most important for your mom and then explain to them how they can achieve that via fitness.  

Nowadays, the internet is filled to the brim with fitness resources. Our moms also are adept at using the internet for watching YouTube, social media and learning new things. Make use of the technology at hand and send them videos, blogs, and workout routines to educate them on the importance of fitness. Sometimes, an online article or video may just be the motivation booster that your mom needs to begin their fitness journey. 

One of the biggest factors that may discourage our mothers from keeping themselves fit is their age. Age can be a mental obstacle that many of our parents feel will prevent them from exercising like youngsters. Tell them that age is just a number and any person, where they’re 20 or 80 years old, can exercise if they want to. There are hundreds of age-appropriate exercises that one can practise and get fit. 

Once you have done the above and educated your mom, the best way to move forward is to kickstart their fitness journey for her. There are so many options here.
